New HOME AUDIO store opening in Auckland

Posted 6 March, 2010 #

You read it here first!

There is a new home audio store aopening in central Auckland very soon.

Eastern HiFi Newmarket at 269 Khyber Pass will not re-open, however a new outlet is being prepared as you read this.

It wa s a very hard decision not to open the Newmarket store but in light of the Les Mills redevelopment we decided to look for a new location.

This will be a a lot more than a relocation, it will be a completely new approach to home audio retail.

So watch this space as we keep posting updates leading to the Grand Opening.

so who are the Auck hifi dealers now?
    Paul Money x2
    Turned On
    Shore
    Demo Room
    Strawberry
That is 6...seems plenty for a city of Aucks size.

While on on it how many in NZ?
    25?
    Add the 6 above to
    Listening Room
    Eastern HiFi Tga
    Grahams
    Acoustic Audio
    Image
    Real
    Top
    Pure

that is 14 and I am running out of names....
    any to add?

I suppose you could throw in one or two general appliance retailers like Heathcotes in Hamilton who sport a good range at their Hamilton store.

    Barrells in Whangarei

The 100% store in Ashburton seems OK too, Hollands?

Thats just Auckland. Do your homework and stop spouting off on subjects you clearly know nothing about.

    what defines one?
surely to be a creditable specialist retail outlet a range with either/or Yamaha, Denon, Pioneer or Onkyo is mandatory?
Starting in LaLa land like the Demo room is an example, a store like that will never 'step the mainstream up' to the next level (which is what a specialist should be skilled enough to do). Audio lounges with a sterile displays of sweet kit designed to give you a woody is not in my mind the definition of a specialist.

Mike went for the safe option, he is headed to APG where Mr Dwyer offered a warmer blanket than Avalon could. It is a big call to head to Aus, he is well known in NZ audio circles but a complete unknown across the ditch. All the best to him anyway as he has obviously decided to take up a challenge.

I know Avalon are sitting on a fair bit of Audioquest stock bought from the receivers, they will likely dump it for the best price they can get...this means the cable market will be messy for the next 6 months or so.
Considering landed cost on a 1m HDMI cable is about $15 bucks there is likely to be some damn cheap HDMI popping up real soon.

    Audioquest copy cable | posted 9 Mar 2010, 10:32PM | # | Report

I know Audioquest copy cable has been a real problem, it is easy to source ex Hong Kong. With this distribution change I predict a 'sudden' influx of fake cable will occur, with two distributors having stock it will be easy to blur the lines.

The people who run the new company are the same people that mismanaged the old one. Now with Michael Sherman gone how long do you think it will be before people realise who they now have to deal with? If there was any real hope for this new company to survive Michael Sherman was it. The current management have burnt so many bridges in getting where they are it will become untenable I am sure. If you were looking from the outside and had abit of actual industry knowledge changing distributors makes absolute sense if you actually want your product to succeed and not just pumped out through discount chains by someone who doesn't embrace your philosophy. I know Bill Low of Audioquest takes his brand and philosophy of the brand seriously, obviously.

    counterfeit | posted 10 Mar 2010, 8:04AM | # | Report

I agree with the above re things getting messy.
The cable section of the market is not big these days being mainly HDMI and speaker cables with a few inter connects thrown in for good measure. Avalon will look to dispose of its stock which according to a few I have spoken to is enough to make more than a a splash, this combined with the new distributor bringing in a range for its group of dealers will make things interesting. I know dealers who have been offered via email just this week counterfeit Audioquest HDMI A series cable for $22:00 ea. (1m length) so it is all about to get interesting.
This is no different to when Avalon lost Denon, they somehow managed to keep selling it for a good 9 months afterward as did B&W keep selling Onkyo for 6 months after Avalon took over in 2008 as well as Wildash STILL selling Marantz

The NZ market is about to be choked up with Audioquest which may damage the brand, if I was Audioquest I would have secured Avalons stock holding to avoid the situation that is about to happen here. The good news is quality cable is about to get a whole lot cheaper...yippee! Just keep an eye out for the fake stuff!

    Straightwire | posted 10 Mar 2010, 8:09AM | # | Report

Surely Avalon will just relaunch the Straightwire brand?
Lets face it, cable brands are a dime a dozen even if AQ is one of the better ones.

Straightwire may not hold the brand status in NZ AQ does but if the pricing was significantly hotter than AQ it may be an option.

    fake stuff | posted 10 Mar 2010, 9:55AM | # | Report

I would not be too worried about the fake stuff, it is the same or very close to the real stuff, especially the speaker cable. The only thing I would steer well clear of is any HDMI longer than 2m.
However if REAL stuff is about to be dumped onto the NZ market maybe the fake stuff would be a dumb buy anyway?

    Speculation | posted 10 Mar 2010, 11:23AM | # | Report

There is a lot of speculation here. Who actually knows what stock holding Avalon has? I doubt they would have t at much, and really, who is oging to buy rolls of cable unless you actually need it? Or have a stockpile of cables sitting at home just in case? People only buy things they need, and unless they have a whole lot of reference level cable going for cheap I don't think this is going to cause any issues in the market.

Interdyn like APG and Sound Group (& others) are 'old school' distributors who require an embarrassment of riches (heaps of brands) in their portfolio as some form of measurement of their standing as a business. None of these companies do every single brand they carry justice, they do a good job on 2 or 3 and after that it is a lucky dip.

Take APG, it has been a contentious point with D&M that when Denon was gifted to APG for Aus and NZ there would be more focus and consolidation on the D&M brands. The opposite has occured, APG has added Loewe which has drained resource from the D&M brands.Don't get me wrong, APG do a good job for D&M in Aus, the market is better there and that is also APG's home patch where they have a long history, on the other hand if anyone thinks D&M are delighted with APG's efforts in NZ think again.
Like Interdyn, APG is an Australian company with an office in NZ, if it makes a profit the loot is shipped back to Aus, if it makes a loss that comes in handy for tax purposes.

If you scroll back through the blogs there is definitley a few who do not wish Avalon company well, such as the worm who has enjoyed the Audioquest development. It seems many hoped the receivership was the end of the line and when they got back up off the mat is was both a surprise and dissapointment. That is the whole tall poppy kiwi bash thing that is alive and well everywhere.

    Speaker brands | posted 12 Mar 2010, 7:25AM | # | Report

There are leading brands retailers MUST consider if they have the future in mind....

ENGLISH brands - it will be B&W or KEF at #1 and 2
US brands - Klipsch, JBL and Polk
    Danish brands Jamo and Dynaudio

There are a billion others to choose from but the handful above are the PLAYERS on a global level. Everything else is really struggling.
Names not mentioned do not mean they are no good, my point is the world speaker market is flooded and among the huge selection there are genuine contenders and it is obvious if you look close who they really are.

Wharfedale SHOULD be there but really has declined in position and quality in the past 18 months. Hard to leave Mission out too but the times they are a changing.

Plenty will not like my comment but look at the financial status of the companys as we as the emotional appeal of the brands first.

I think the saving grace for KEF was the C series to give them the volume, before that the brand kicked in around $2k which cuts out a lot of buyers.
B&W is great but probably noty as strong as KEF in the sub sat range. The KEF KHT speaker sets are very good and well priced.

Tannoy has improved in recent years but like KEF used to be, no entrance point that is low enough to generate vloume.

Polk is huge in the US, the TSi series is hot, Subs are awesome but their sub sat home theatre pack really suck.

For my money I would be looking at KEF iQ series. The 90s floorstanders cobo'd with the iQ10 as rears is a bucket load of speaker action for about $4k.

The Jamo range is sub sat range unbelievable when you look at value for money too.

I guarantee that there is more margin in selling one pair of moderately priced AQ cables than in one of those discounted Onkyo receivers. SO i very much doubt AQ is the smallest brand by revenue.

Just been told the January Gfk results, Onkyo still #1 which is a bit of a shock considering the receivership happened Jan/Feb.
About $400k sales. I can not see how cables would be more than that.
Onkyo's only real contender in NZ at this stage is Yamaha who seem to have closed the gap between #1 and #2.

What is this obsession with Gfk? do you get a special star saying you've sold the most? Who gives a toss.

    Well...
You certainly do not get a prize for selling the least!
You get the boot and a wooden spoon to play with while you are unemployed.

The obsession with Gfk will be driven by Livewire (Vaughan).

He has always been focussed on market share as a form of measurement, it will also have a lot to do with his background in Japanese companies (Sony, Fujifilm).

When you deal with the national retailers as Avalon / Onkyo does then it is critical to know how you are tracking against other brands you are lined up (competing) with. The big retailers track sell through very closely because they literally have tens of millions tied up in stock, slow moving stock / brands will simply be marginalised, hence the obsession with market share.

Based on the above knowledge of the size of the market you trade in along with awareness of your own slice of the pie would be a fundamental piece of information to help form your business plan I would of thought?

understandable some dislike or do not care for market shares. if your focus is shifting one or two higher value amps each week then its relevance is not high.
look at what is happening to hifi specialists though: they truely are fading away, Eastern HiFi is gone in Auckland and Wellington, Hubands are history and who knows will be next but it does not look good.
    It is a real shame.

The owners of the 'new' Avalon are the same people who drove the old one into the ground.

If you actually know the facts this is not the case - they are simply relocating and finding the right premises.

ohh.. they are also the same people that ripped of millions of dollars from local suppliers, and small private shareholders, and they dont give a damn. Such standup people, VW give yourself a pat on the back and stand tall before you go down as it is going to happen.

Strange that every time someone comments on the unscrupulous nature of the management of this company, they are accused of having issues, or having been a disenfranchised ex staff member. Maybe they are just someone with an opinion.

Wake up! ...when you jump into a public arena like this one and pop your own 'opinion' as you have it is pretty obvious there will be a response. Do you have a problem with someone responding to you?

If you really think the key people in Avalon don't 'give a damn' then you really are a drip. I should not complain, we need people like you...you make the rest of us look good.

    new store | posted 15 Mar 2010, 9:33PM | # | Report

I have it on good authority that the new store being opened by Avalon in Newmarket will be open in the first week of April. The opening is supposed to be timed to coincide with the arrival of the 2010 Onkyo receiver range. The TX-SR608 is being released first and early because the TX-SR607 is now sold out.

You have to give some credit to the management of Avalon, they have taken the Onkyo brand to a new level since picking up distribution from B&W about a year ago. It may not appeal to some specialist dealers the way it is driven as a volume brand via the national retailers but it is certainly the brand to have on your shelf when you compare features for the money.

And, NO I am not an employee of Avalon!
(But I do own an Onkyo TX-SR806)

Saw the site today, not bad...it will be interesting to see what Avalon does with it compared to the old Eastern HiFi store in Newmarket

    not a bad thing | posted 17 Mar 2010, 8:41AM | # | Report

It wouldn't be a bad thing to be able to go to one store and see a full brand offering of receivers, amps etc in a location isolated from the retail precincts. Thats kind what Eastern HiFi a;lways was wasn't it? (With Denon and now with Onkyo)
